Design Process

We invite you to come to our studio where we can begin the process of designing a custom piece of jewelry. You may choose to include stones from jewelry that you have, we will be happy to use those in your new piece. The first step is to visit and share your ideas with us…perhaps you have seen finished pieces on the web site (delivered custom work) that have features that intrigue you…or we can start fresh and go in an entirely new direction. We can also show other available stones which may be necessary for the new idea.

David will have an independent appraiser look at your stones and ours to do a pre appraisal, meaning that they will be weighed, measured, color and clarity identified, the value of the stone will be determined, before setting in the wax. From this first meeting, we will begin the drawings. When we have approval on the drawing, David will carve a wax model, generally this takes approximately two weeks. When you come to inspect the wax, it will have all of the detail you have decided on as well as the stones in place so that you can slip it on your finger and see it in three dimensions.

On approval, David will remove the stones, and cast the wax into metal. (There is a video of his casting process on the web site.) From there it is all about the finishing process, and setting the stones. Again, we like to have approximately two weeks for this process. A final appraisal will be done and then – it is ready for you. We have been making jewelry, custom design, for over 60 years and find this a most satisfying process. Becoming acquainted with your personality, what you find of interest, what is important in your life and putting in some of that spirit, allows us to make a piece you can truly treasure as your own personal amulet.
